10131 - Optimal Policies for Reducing Unnecessary Follow-up Mammography Exams in Breast Cancer Diagnosis

Course Directors

Oguzhan Alagoz, Ph.D., University of Wisconsin
Elizabeth S. Burnside, M.D., University of Wisconsin
Jagpreet Chhatwal, Ph.D., MD Anderson Cancer Center

Description

This course provides structured guidelines based on a decision-analytical approach that are designed to help radiologists decide when to recommend biopsy or short-interval follow-up based on a patient-specific breast cancer risk. The course presents a decision process model that optimizes the post-mammography diagnostic decisions for an individual woman that maximizes her total expected quality-adjusted life-years. Clinical data is used in solving the model and the results are compared with the actual decisions made by radiologists.
